Following the Barkers

Thursday August 4, 2011

We finished all business here at Spartan yesterday, so there was no need to get up too early this morning.  We left Charlotte at about 10.
Our first stop was in Lansing for pictures of the Michigan state capitol building.  There is a loop that actually made it easy to get around in the area.  At first it seemed that parking might be a problem.  I spotted a long space without meters.
The building was started in 1847 and completed in 1879
The signage said for school buses only, None were in sight so I stopped there while Gerri went around the grounds taking the pictures.
From Lansing it was about 210 miles to St, Ignace.  It seemed like a very long drive.  I was pretty tired and only missed stopping at two rest stops along the way.
The bridge from the "Mitt" of Michigan to the Upper Peninsula was a toll bridge.  Now we are Yoopers, but it cost us $17.00.  "Mighty Mac" is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere.  There was construction on the bridge and it was down to one lane.  Tomorrow we hope to get some pictures of the bridge which is visible in the distance from the RV park.  We got to the RV park at 5 PM.  We got the last space.  A Michigan chapter of FMCA is having a rally here.  I met a few of the members and they have invited us to join their activities.

Gerri plans to catch up on laundry now that we have water and sewer connections.  We plan to visit Mackinac Island tomorrow and maybe go see the Soo locks later,
