Following the Barkers

Following the Barkers

Tuesday, May 7, 2013, Las Vegas, NV

We got up early and started our daily coffee and computer routine.

At 10 we went to Chicago Title to meet Linda and Gary and signed the final papers for the land sale.  At the tile company I also got a letter signed and notarized  authorizing the withdrawal and wiring the funds to the title company.  We faxed the letter to the credit union along with the instructions for where to wire the money.  Later I got a call from the credit union to verify our account information and the deal was done.  We got club house and mailbox keys from Linda along with the electronic gate opener for the resort.  Does this make us land barons in Arizona?

After getting back to the resort we got the coach ready to travel and then visited with the Kerslakes.  After a while Alice said oh my gosh, I had a dental appointment.   She called and they told her to come on in.  We quickly finished our goodbyes.  Alice sped off and we pulled out shortly afterward.

All in all this was an enjoyable short trip.  We enjoyed a beautiful area, I did some caching and visited with good friends.  The only downside was that we only got to see Keith one evening because of his business trip.

The drive home was 153 miles and took three and a half hours, including fueling up at Sam's.  It is a sad commentary when you think $3.559 a gallon is cheap fuel.

We did encounter some heavy rain just north of Searchlight, actually it bordered on hail.  We had another rain shower at Railroad Pass.  Traffic wasn't too heavy and we got home about 4 PM.  The temperature was about 70.  It didn't take long to take things out of the motorhome and we were finished with that before dark.

Before retiring I went through the mail that had come during the week.  It is amazing how much we get, more than half went directly into the trash.  The rest amounted to just checking it out.  After an hour I ended up with one bill and two approvals for upcoming medical procedures.

Monday, May 6, 2013, Lake Havasu City, AZ

Typical start to our day.  Coffee made and drank while catching up on e-mail and Facebook.

I contacted my credit union on the procedure for getting money wired to the title company here in Lake Havasu City.  I typed up what I needed to send to the credit union and then had to go to Alice's to print the letter.  I haven't re-installed the printer in our coach since the last computer crash.

In the afternoon I went out and did one cache.  I had a travel bug to drop off.

After getting back to the coach I just hung around until dinner time.  Alice's husband Keith came back from Texas this evening.  We had dinner after he got back,  BBQ ribs, baked beans and potato salad.

We had a great visit with him and called it a night about 9:00 PM.

Sunday, May 5, 2013, Lake Havasu City, AZ

Up early again today,  I guess it has something to do with going to bed at 9:30.  The wind that came up last night stayed with us.  If it is blowing tonight I think I will take the flags down.  I won't be bothered by the flapping and there will be less wear and tear on the flags.

After coffee we tuned into the Bible study web cast from Oakey Blvd. Church of Christ.  Gerri stayed at the coach for the web cast of the worship service.  I got dressed and went to worship at the Palo Verde Church of Christ, it is only a couple of miles south on AZ-95.  The sermon was on Jonah and his attempts to run from the commands of God.  At the end of services the preacher announced that he had to move at the end of May because of illness in his family.  This is a congregation of about 50 that will now be looking for a new minister.  As usual in these situations it will be up to the men of the congregation to share the duties of the minister until a new one is located.  From my short conversations with the minister and other members of the congregation there are several capable and willing men to keep things moving along during the search.  In Matthew 16:18 Christ say"..upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."  Surely keeping the "gates of hell" at bay is a more formidable task than guiding the congregation through a search for a new preacher.

In the afternoon I went out and found three nearby caches that my previous pocket query missed.  They were all easy.

Gerri fixed enchiladas, Alice fixed Mexican Rice and we had supper at her place.  The wind had slowed down to a nice breeze and it was very comfortable.

It may sound like a dull day, but it was a grand day to enjoy God's creation.

We were up early, for us.  No wind this morning.  We had coffee and put in some computer time.  I have been using Cox web-mail and this morning I couldn't access the page.  I got all the other pages I usually go to, including Cox pages.  I called Cox and of course put up with an hour hold including useless and irritating audio response messages.  When I finally was connected to a tech I gave him a description of the problem and all my account information.  He asked me to hold for a minute.  During the minute the page came back on.  Of course the tech claimed there was no problem.  My suspicion has always been that they do something to correct the problem while talking to you but will never admit it.  This has happened almost every time I have called with a problem.  Why would there be an hour of hold time if a lot of people weren't calling to report the problem?

The upside of the long call was last night after dinner Gerri had committed me to washing the dishes, by the time I got off the phone Alice had already done the dishes.

I downloaded a few area caches and went out to try some of the closest.  At the first one I met a cacher from Oregon.  I found four and didn't find one.  By mid after noon it had become quite warm.

Gerri and Alice had gone shopping.  I didn't see any results of the shopping so I guess they didn't go buying.

We had dinner at Alice's again, The steak left over from last night, a salad and large baked potato with all the trimmings.

After dinner we called it a night early.

Friday, May 3, 2013, Lake Havasu City, AZ

Since it was early to bed last night, it was early to rise this morning.  Some time during the night the wind had stopped.  After making coffee I went out and put the flags up.  I didn't want to do that yesterday because I knew the flapping would keep me awake.  Once the flags are up I leave them up.  I have a light on the pole that lights up the flags.

Linda and Gary picked us up at about 12:15.  We went to the title company and the agent went through the paper work we had filled out on the terms of the sale.  We should be able to close escrow early next week before going back to Las Vegas.  The manager of the title company also notarized our signatures on the deed transfer for the sale of our property in Elko, NV.  We visited for awhile after returning to the park.  Gary and Linda are leaving Friday for their home in Washington.  They have a winter home here in Lake Havasu City and a summer home in Washington, nearer to their children and grandchildren.

Later in the afternoon Gerri and Alice went shopping.  I had asked in the park office where a UPS store was, they directed me to a nearby Staples store.  I went there and shipped the escrow papers back to the title company in Elko to finalize the sale of our land there.  While I was out I stopped at a sales lot that features old vehicles and hot rods for sale.  They had several '57 Chevy and a few older Chevy's.  An interesting exercise in nostalgia, but I don't think I need another car.  Even a fun one.

Dinner was planned for six at Alice's place.  We went there and visited with another neighbor couple we had met here in February.  That delayed supper but not too long.  Before dinner we had guacamole with some mango mixed in and chips. Alice grilled corn on the cob and steaks and made her famous onion salad.  Gerri sauteed mushrooms and grilled bread.  Quite a feast.

We called it a night at about 9:30.

Thursday, May 2, 2013, Lake Havasu City, AZ

I brought the motor home to the house yesterday afternoon.  Vicki cleaned the inside after she finished the house.  I had Red Rock RV Wash come out and wash the motor home, including the roof.

We didn't have a lot to load on board and pulled out at about 10 AM.  Our route was Hacienda to Rainbow, to CC-215 to I-515 to US-93.  We traveled US-15 to I-40 on to AZ-93 to Lake Havasu City.  The wind was blowing all the time.  It was from behind us until we turned on I-40.

We arrived at the Havasu RV Resort at about 1 PM.  Alice greeted us in the office.  We are staying at the site we plan on buying, so it only cost us $5 to register.  Our site is #167, next door to the west from our friends Keith and Alice.  I backed into the site.  When the wind is calmer I plan to check and see if I can pull in, depends on enough shore power cord to reach the power pedestal.  We should meet the owners of the site this evening and finalize the sale, it will then be our property.

After getting all set up I tried to check my e-mail.  I hadn't used the computer since our February/March trip and forgot that I hadn't re-installed Microsoft Office since the disk had been reformatted.  That means no Outlook, I'm getting my Cox e-mail through their web-mail   We have a good connection so it doesn't seem as slow as usual.  I brought Gerri's old laptop to configure for my use.  I brought some program disks to load on that computer, ones she normally doesn't use.  Microsoft Office wasn't one of them.

The site owners Gary and Linda Michaelis came by at about three and we discussed various things about the sale and purchase.  They will pick us up at 12:30 tomorrow to go to the title company to finalize the sale.

It turns out Keith is in Texas for a business meeting.  That and the wind combined led us to the decision to eat out.  We went to the Lil China Restaurant downtown.  Good food and plenty of it.

After returning to the park and saying our good nights to Alice, we watched a little TV and caught up our e-mail.  We were in bed by 9 PM.
