Monday July 7, 2014 Homer, Alaska

It rained most of the night, sometimes heavily.  It looked like I had taken a chance on it being clear in vane.  I lucked out it wasn't raining when we got up and had our coffee.

Cook Inlet from a view point, there are active volcanoes in those clouds
I hooked up the Jeep, unhooked the utilities and put away the flags.  Gerri got the inside ready to travel.  With the amount of rain with no wind, there was a lot of water on the slide toppers.  We had to run the large slide in several times before the water was gone enough for it to roll up properly.  We were on the road at 9:30.  The first 60 miles was a backtrack of Saturday's drive.  We then turned onto the Sterling Highway, AK-1.  We passed Kenai Lake and many other small lakes and streams.  The road was good so we made good time, often going 55-60 mph.

We felt welcome, I found a cache near here
I stopped at several pull outs but most of them required a hike through the woods to get a view.  Others weren't that good of a view because of the weather.

We arrived at the Heritage RV Park at 1:45.  This park is on a narrow strip of land, surrounded on both sides by water.  Most of the Homer Spit is taken up by RV Parks, tour companies, a few restaurants and a couple of fish processing companies.  There are a couple of boat launch ramps and a fairly large small boat harbor.

After setting up I went out and found two caches, there are 10 on the Spit.  Interestingly the bay the Spit extends into is named Kachemak Bay.  For some reason they didn't all show up on my query of the area.

Those of us that are going fishing in the morning met with Ben and Nancy at 5.  We put in our orders for box lunches.  After the meeting we drove to the Fishing Charter Office and bought fishing licenses.  I spared them my joke about wanting a catching license instead.

Nancy checked with the tour operator that does bear watching but they were booked up all the time we are here.

Gerri fixed a pasta dish with sausage for dinner, with a salad.

After getting things ready for tomorrow's 5:45 departure, she relaxed on the computer before we went to bed.
